Common questions

Nope. The assessment is completely free. No credit card, no account, no catch. You'll get your child's reading level, a breakdown of which phonics patterns they've got down and which ones need work, and tips on what to practice next. We email everything to you right away.
Just your email and your child sitting with you. They'll read flashcard words out loud while you tap whether they got each one right. That's it. About five minutes total.
If your child is learning to read or still building their decoding skills, yes. The assessment covers readers from kindergarten up to about Grade 8, roughly ages 5 to 14. That's everything from sounding out "cat" to tackling words with Latin roots.
We only ask for your email. We don't collect your child's name, age, or school. Everything is built and hosted in Canada, and we never sell data. You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy.
It's surprisingly thorough. Your child reads real flashcard words across progressively harder phonics patterns, so we're testing actual decoding, not guessing from a quiz. The results show exactly which phonics patterns they've mastered and which ones need work, not just a generic grade level.
Yes. Any device with a web browser works. You don't need to download anything. Just have your child sit with you so they can read the words out loud while you tap the screen.
The email you get includes your child's reading level, which patterns they know well, which ones to practice, and specific activities you can do at home. If you want to keep going, you can sign up and get personalized stories, flashcards, and progress tracking built around those same results.

Level 1

Reading check

Have your child read each word aloud. Tap whether they know it or not.

Sit beside your learner. You hold the screen and tap what you hear. This isn't a test they can fail. There's nothing to score and nothing to study for; it just finds the right starting point.

Preparing the placement…

Rung 1.1 Reading check Block of five
Ask your learner to read this word out loud
First word in the block

"Read it with effort" still counts as read. It's a private note for you, never shown to your learner and it never changes the level. 4 out of 5 moves up; 1 out of 5 steps back down. Change the last answer with Undo. Nothing is locked until the block finishes.

Sight words Recognized, not sounded out Quick sight-word check
Show this word. Does your learner know it on sight?
First word

These are heart words: words we learn by sight, not by sounding out. This is separate from the reading level and doesn't change it.

Letter & sound check

Let's start with sounds and letters.

Reading whole words isn't the right starting point yet, and that's completely fine. You read each prompt aloud and tap what your learner can do. This places them directly, no rungs needed.

You say it · they answer

Read each prompt aloud, then tap a tile green if your learner gets it, or leave it for "not yet". There's no audio recording in this step.

When the check is done we place your learner as a pre-reading learner and start with the foundational letter-sound scope. No story read this round.

Sound play Chain 1 Changing one sound at a time
Say the word, then ask for the change. Out loud, no reading
Change from cat

Now change the FIRST sound to /s/. What word?

Changed 0 of 0 so far
First sound change

This is a quick sound-play game. No letters or reading, just changing one sound in a word out loud. It's a separate signal we record for the teaching plan and it doesn't change the placement. If a change is tricky, mark "Missed it" and keep going. You can finish early any time below.
